why?
Well, .NET should be supported. World domination
doesn't
happen by rebuilding things, but by taking
them over.
This is a way for Opensource to take over .NET!!
And lose it all when M$ pulls the rug out from
under
our feet?
Please elaborate on this point and enlighten us. The effort is not dependent on Microsoft in any such way that "M$ can pull the rug out". You're being paranoid.
Not just me, a whole lot of others too. Track the posts on Linuxtoday et al, and you'll get my drift.
C# is going to be more of a standard than Java. Microsoft has submitted the C# spec. to the ECMA for standardisation. It's better than Sun, at least at face value.
Actually, I don't do Java, and probably will not do C# either, even if it is ported on Linux. So I guess I don't have any opinion either way as far as a comparison with Java goes. The thing I'm concerned about is not C# the language (there are lots of programming languages out there, each with its own reason for existence - or lack thereof), but rather Hailstorm, which is a part of .Net. M$ will have .Net users by the short and curlies here, and will not hesitate to pull the rug when it suits them, as it definitely will, when it finds opensource products grabbing mind and market share.
Think about it....
It would be nice to have C# programs run on Windows and Linux alike. Remember, Linux needs more end-user apps, that are likely to be developed using C# `for Windows' over the next 2-3 years. With a few modifications, they'll run on Linux. Ximian is developing stuff for GUI apps in C# (that will again run on Windows out of the box). What more do you want?
As I said before, it isn't the language I'm concerned about.
Microsoft has already offered a .Net implementation for Linux under their shared-source licence. Here these guys are rewriting everything so as to be totally independent (GPL).
Which will be compatible with Hailstorm for just as long as Microsoft wants it to be!
Anyway, I'm no expert on e-com, but am just worried about a possible scenario where MS manages to make everyone move to its standard - and then changes the standard.
Regards,
Krishnan
