Configuring the card everytime a person boots is a mess I was wondering if that could be done while booting itself ( either by assignin a static ip per cd or giving it a dhcp server name in the script) we could run a dhcp server from a linux.
you can install linux using ehterboot. in this, the main image remains on the server (any one machine will have linux installed on it and will act as server). each client will boot either from an etherboot floppy or nic boot rom image (this has option to boot via network or local disk - windows). the clients take their filesystm from server via nfs and dhcp/tftp. you can get more info at etherboot.sourceforge.net or www.ltsp.org. there are howtos also available for the same. we had implemented this on our college network and user find no difference between the local linux and remote linux. try this. you can even boot into x windows if u wish to. only time u need to spend is to install linux on server and on one client. once a client is setup, addition of rest of them is a matter of seconds.
A samba would be required to store data to a windows machine which will act like a server or can I use a machine that's running only rh8 with a ftp deamon?
you can use anything on this box, its completely transparent.
