As soon as i killl pppd after sometime the system
may work. I neither see any heavy disk activity during all this. Tried google but could not locate the same error somebody facing too. Any help would be appreci -ated.

Your CPU seems to be overloading. Try installing gkrellm on your desktop or hit CTRL + ALT + F1 and switch to a VT and run the "top" command. I suspect pppd or some related program might be hogging up 99% CPU ;)
