What you need is a download manager, which is basically what "FlashGet" is. There are many other download managers, "wget" being the favourite of most linux users. Its available for windows too. :) http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/wget.html Since you have started using FlashGet, you can continue with it. About the speed, dont worry, it once took me a month to download an ISO.

Might I add the very useful d4x to the list of useful downloaders. Basically its GUI ( gtk ) based and supports resume, multi-site downloading, scheduling, b/w controlling etc etc.
