So the os was reloaded and this time the mbr option was selected. The os was loaded with the 'workstation' type installation.
There was no need for this. You could've booted into the single usermode and edited grub.conf(menu.lst) by hand to point to your partitions. It's very simple ;)
A peculiar feature of Mandrake is that root cannot log into the X mode. On typing a root password, the login window only giggles and wiggles. The root has console access only.

For you digicam, just checkout which file transfer modes does it offer. My sony digicam supports ptp, normal, and some other mode. In ptp mode, gtkam is able to download photos but unable to upload. But in normal mode the camera works like a usb-mass-storage device. I can mount it as a vfat fs and use it to transfer pictures etc... BUT I can use it for storing regular files too ^^. My Sony digicam uses Sony memory stick. I guess cannon must have something similar.
