Lenny has a live cd too. It boots a full desktop on only 256 MB machines.
Such replies are too vague. Whenever something does not work, it would be better if some details are provided about what actually does not work and at what stage, in what hardware. Sometimes a small workaround may get the system working. I have observed that good mobos with badly written BIOSs can spoil the fun of installing Linux. In windows the mobo drivers have the compensating patches to cover up such mistakes. Linux exposes them, therefore a motherboard that works out of the box in Linux is a good one.
