If windows clients use HTTP proxy to get their messages through Squid then Linux clients should as well.
Thats exactly what I want to say. But its not feasible to hack through every problem that I encounter in GNU/Linux. I already spent a lot of time to find out a way to get my touchpad working flawlessly in Fedora Core 2.
Just hold on here. What the heck are you talking about? Windows clients _dont_ use some magical M$ protocol to get themselves through Squid. I still say it's a configuration issue and nothing more. What system are you using? Care to give some details? Many of the older versions of gaim and kopete have broken protocol support for Yahoo! as well as MSN.
However noble your intentions were, you failed to give enough details about your own problems. All you said was: 1. You dont work. 2. You are a student at a university. 3. Your sysadmin has left. 4. Windows clients work flawlessly through HTTP proxies. 5. Linux clients just don't work.
No more. No less. If I am wrong then please show me your post with the full info. I use multiple machines with multiple email clients so I may have missed that post. I do agree with your point that it was wrong of others to pick out meebo and go off track but your initial problem still remains unsolved.
I again urge you to install the latest versions of whatever IMs you are using. I am using FC4 and kopete's MSN support is _broken_. So even if you are using Ubuntu or whatever distro, update the IM software and try again. If not then I again suggest that you use TCPdump / Ethereal to find out whats going on.
If it works in Windows then it _has_ to work with Linux. There is no excuse for it _not_ to work. The answer might so obvious that it may be staring you in the face and you don't recognize it.
encountering the same problem as myself, and not to beg for needless advice from so-called 'gyaani' people.
Careful.
