But -v is good enough to start. What kernel version?. suggest you go in for the latest -2.6.20 Also sound seems to be the standard als100. So snd-intel8x0 or snd-intel8x0m should work with snd-ac97. Next set volume with alsamixer and test sound recording an playback with aplayer.
I am getting login and logout music. I had already tinkered with alsamxer. I am able to play the Example files, video as well as music with reasonable quality. As mentioned earlier, voice recording playback level is too low from the in-built mic. The only problem is that VCDs and DVDs don't play with sound. Video is OK.
I had earlier tried the official method of installing win32 codecs and libdvdcss in Kubuntu 6.06 for kaffeine but nothing had worked. In that distro, VLC player too gave distorted sound.
Which could mean that the Preferences need to be tweaked. Assuming that you have vlc-alsa and other plugins installed. "apt-cache search vlc" will tell u the available packages and "apt-cache --installed show vlc" will tel u what is installed. From that u can find out if anythin is missing. Also start vlc from a xterm so that you can see what errors it spits out. Can you play an mp3 from vlc.
