I believe most recent distros boot from a 2.4 kernel by default during installation. 2.6 kernels have support for SATA.

You can choose to boot a 2.6 kernel on bootup by passing an argument to "boot:".

I used "linux26" when installing Debian Sarge 3.1r0a on HP 5500 systems with 80 GB SATA HDDs. Check with your distro boot options.
