try adding the following line in lilo.conf if you are using lilo. append=" ide=nodma" and see if things improve. This is passing a parameter to the kernel to turn DMA off. or you can try hdparm -d 0 /dev/hdx where x depends on where your HDD is connected. If these are crc errors this might mean your drive is reaching end of life :(
