There are some machines that are not friendly to certain linux distros so you got to try other versions and flavours too. A few days ago I tried to boot live K/Ubuntu CDs on some machines out of which 2 machines were very stubborn and gave I/O errors for different *buntus even though the drives and media were OK. Surprisingly they were Intel chipset machines of Asus and Gigabyte mobos. On the Asus machine, only Sabayon worked and on the other only XBuntu worked among the *buntus. I suspect that there may be tramp versions of popular chipsets that are cheap and unfriendly.
