I too am looking for a good desktop which would run smoothly on a Celeron 333 / P-II 220 / AMD K6 433 type PCs with good gui menus & functionality.
I believe CDWriter, Sound, Web camera & Modem are all that a regular PC user at home and office would require.
I have RedHat 8 on my Celeron 400 MHz. Linux uses more RAM according to my limitted knowledge. For modem, be on the prowl around the dealers who get a lot of old systems under buyback offers and they may have working external modems to sell. Sound works and I just checked it again before writing this mail and there are many multimedia packages including cd and dvd writer too, some in command line, some in X. RH8 had detected my Yamaha sound card and Trident 975 AGP card.
