Knoppix currently uses Gnome 1.4, we will need to put Gnome 2 in it, that may require removing some packages. If you want to put latest gnome 2.2, you will need to update lot more packages - maybe all of them would have to come from debian unstable releases.
We cannot use unstable releases. We will need to use stable releases.
The list of packages in Knoppix is available at: http://sunsite.rediris.es/mirror/knoppix/packages.txt
We can add/remove packages from it.
Lets check whether we can do it with Gnome 2.2. If not then we will have to opt for Gnome 2.
