With Windows 98 installed. the partition table looks different at least in my PC. Because windoze 98 does not allow more than one primary partition. The Linux partitions should have started from hda5 and onwards, unless you create a boot partition which is usually hda2.
if you could give the exact error Lilo gives, it would be more helpful.
And one more thing, in older systems, such as P2, Lilo requires the start of the boot partition (in your case the root partition) to be within 1024 cylinders. This feature is mother board dependant, raher BIOS dependant.
Finally ( but not limited to) it could be your /etc/lilo.conf file.

I am facing strange Problem with installation of "RedHat Linux 9.0 ". When I try to install on home pc it install completely and then finally evenry thing goes right when i try to boot in to it --- It reboots .
I have tried Grub (as per default) and then Lilo and also XOSL but same thing . Lilo Showed me the error Boot Error . Also When I tried to boot from win98 OS using Loadlin it showed me surprising the installation procedure again . and if i continue it . It asked me again for Installation Media.
I have Successfuly installed "RedHat Linux 9.0 " on same HDD at my office . but it fails at Home .

At home ~~~~~~~~~~~ P2 +64MB RAM + Intel M/B + 20 GB HDD
Partion info ~~~~~~~~~ HDA1-win98 [5GB] HDA2-extened HDA3-Linux natuive HDA4-Linux Swap HDA6-win98-Vfat-space
Boot Loader is on MBR
Any Solution ?
