Which distro is OpenLx based on? What about updates? Can we somehow update packages to latest versions?

OpenLX is based on RPMs. Updates will soon be available from website. And, yes, the basic desktop version can be upgraded to the Server version (from website, once available) and also from the Server version media itself. Smart package manager is configured for this purpose.
