Before someone starts flames you, I'll answer and recommend you to _not_ post questions that seem to be Abbreviations or computer terms, that you hear for the first time.
GIS stands for Geographic Information System.
I'll tell you how you can find out information that you want.
1. For cases such as the above, you can use Google (and type define:GIS in the textbox.
2. Use Wikipedia (if you are not against it)
3. Use other search engines that you like (Yahoo!, Rediff etc.)
