First of all let me tell that there are 4 kind of Cables available for Nokia. 1.FBUS 2.MBUS 3.FBUS & MBUS (switchable) 4.Flasher Cable
For your information a Flasher Cable communicate with your PC trough LPT port instead of COM port as it is with regular FBUS/MBUS cable AKA Data Cable.
I assume that you also dont know the difference between FBUS and MBUS.. Here it goes:
The FBUS has two pins for Transmitting and receiving data. The MBUS has one pin for bi-directional data transfer. When some of the components inside the mobile phone are changed, they need to use the MBUS. Only Nokia Data Cable has both FBUS & MBUS which are according to the pin out name.
Now wat all a Data Cable (FBUS & MBUS) can do:
A Data Cable is generally used for servicing phones such as changing IMEI or open phone lock as well as SIM lock, it can be also used for changing mobile phone screen logo, typing SMS from PC keyboard, designing unique ringtone, etc. Other feature is that it can be used to send Fax and browse Internet. One can also customise phone menu, prebuilt ringtones also prebuilt Picture messages.
A Flasher Cable is EXTENSIVELY used for Flashing software to cell. I can explain Flashing process but its not short, so checkout the pointers below.

Flasher Cable Details. Read the NOTE which clearly states that Flasher Cables cannot be used to change phones book, pics, tones, etc. -> http://ucables.com/ref/NK-FLASH2

Flasher cable Parallel port connector -> http://gsmsearch.com/faq/conectorNKFLASH2.jpg

I sure this is sufficient for you.
Its been about 2 weeks that we are discussing on this topic and few of us have showed interest in this, why dont we held a meet for this project. I cant we have enough material to start off but we can meet and discuss out the possibilities.
Regards,
Latesh.

Hey Guys,
Sherlock@vsnl.com mentioned the important aspects
of
hardware and there's other stuff like IRDA, Camera
and
Bluetooth which I can think of now. These are not really necessary at first stage but we cant
overlook
them. And AKAIK FBUS connection is generally used
for
transferring Pics, tones and logos n stuff and MBUS connection is used to Unlock the cell. A Flasher
cable
is used to Flash the software to Cell. Can anyone
get
ARM disassembler as I've the software for 3310
objdump, BIEW, gdb. Can u describe the 3310 flasher cable. does it have
an adapter with 4
spring loaded pins that mounts under the battery. If
so it is the regular
fbus /Mbus adapter. Describe the flash process too.
and other utils which are used to flash the software to 3310 and I guess is the ideal and inexpensive cell
to
start off.
We will have to piggy back more flash on to the
existing flash later - a
little risky as u may wind up screwing the phone.
