IIRC, this problem, while it could be caused by a faulty CD, can be fixed by recompiling the kernel with
hda is unlikely to be his CD drive; if it is then he's got bigger problems.
hda is likely the primary master hard disk with his Win root and maybe Linux root. That's a different set of problems. It could be failing.
