Samba will not use your unix password there is a special file call smbpasswd which you will need to authenticate to samba users.
the command to add user for samba is smbpasswd
follow the below procedure
i assume the username is SAM
# cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/smbpasswd # smbpasswd -a SAM # chmod 600 /etc/smbpasswd # testparm
if you do not get any error after executing testparm your smb.conf is fine.
now one more thing is to be noted... Windows 95 will not use encrypted passwords.
Windows 98 and latter supports encrypted password.
