I have noticed that telco engineers are often completely clueless about personal computing. My direct experience is Reliance, Tata Indicom and MTNL. None knew that there were alternatives to Windows, and that many users of such existed in Mumbai city at least. It took a while for Reliance to create a download for a GNU/Linux compatible dialer for their CDMA fixed wireless service.
wvdial and kppp works fine on the reliance network even before they officially announced the service (personally tested ). What were they trying to "create"
I don't know if it also works on the Tata service. I do know that asking MTNL for help can be a very frustrating experience.
wvdial and kppp works on Tataindicom (personally tested). It also works on orange, airtel, and bpl gprs and gsmdata (personally tested.
So next time (and there will be a next time) someone asks for help do look for ways of providing it instead of finding reasons why it should not be given. If you can't think of a way please don't discourage others from trying - by all means let us know of the pitfalls though. That's what an open forum is for.
not unless the person has made an attempt to resolve his problems thru readily available means FIRST. GNU/Linux is all about self help. If you do not do that you are leaving the door wide open to the problem you are trying to escape - dependence.
I think it is part of our community's obligation to write and get these things written down in their advertisements. Could Terrence take this responsibility, and if you need help, I can ask Anurag to take some burden and meet the officers personally. along with M$ GNU/Linux should also be listed as supported. And their docuementation should also include howtos for these systems. Tell them we will help them to get the relevant info.
