I am trying to run Tally 5.4 using Wine. Every time I execute wine Wtally.exe, I receive watcom error message. Has anybody managed to run Tally 5.4 using? Please share your experience.
The problem with a regestered copy of tally is that it has a hardware lock that is probably the reason you get the watcom error. If it's a accounting package you are looking for linux provides a whole range of software including the one developed by kenneth http://avsap.sourceforge.net
Try using "accounting package on linux" on google it throws up a bunch of stuff u could user to get the same job done

Nah. As far as Tally 5.4 is concerned there is no *hardware* lock. I am running genunice or licence vesion of Tally 5.4 without any problem. I am not using any hardware lock.
Sorry Komal, someone is making a thorough fool of you. All official copies of Tally 5.4 necessarily need a hardware lock / dongle to work. The lock may be put in the parallel port of any pc on the network (if configured properly) but it is absolutely necessary.
If you are using a copy of tally 5.4 without the lock, then it is a pirated copy and someone has gyped you out of Rs. 36000. I would suggest you call tally and speak to them or contact them on their website.
On the other hand the progarm that you mention avsap is not professionl quality and dosn't have facilty to import data from Tally.
First, no software has import facility from tally. Tally uses a proprietory database from which you cannot access any data. What some people do is to export data from tally and then bring it in to other accounting softwares. I am sure AVSAP can also do it.
Speaking as an accountant, Tally is really crap. It would be a good software for home accounting or for a very small company where the entire accounts is done by one person and he is interested in manipulation of accounts for tax rather than getting correct or accurate accounts. It lacks the simplest of controls and in any normal business (specially corporate) scenario, it is a timebomb waiting to explode.
I have not seen avspa yet (I had promised them, but didnt get time). We all need to help them make features better by telling them what is wrong or what needs to be changed / improved.
