Ummm. Why are you running mutt as root? Run your mail client as some other user.
errno=2" [to that effect] Now, I have a fair idea of what it means, because I deleted the file called 'root' in /var/spool/mail [even though some stuff in it explicitly told me not to mess around with it].
That wasn't about the mail file, it was about deleting the first mail in the mailbox (a mail system message).
But is there any way that I can get the file replaced/remade?
Just copy any other user's mail file to root and change owner. Make sure that there is only the default message in it.
