this happens when the root device of the sort (/dev/hda5) does not contain the root filesystem that is expected by the kernel. possible causes: either the partition in question is corrupt. or your kernel dosent support the filesystem in question e.g: old kernels will fail if ext3/reiser fs is used for / or something else though i can visualise the above two possibilities only:)
