I was using Debian and just did the following - apt-get install xsane
Then ran 'xsane' and it autodetected the scanner & scanned & save the file in JPEG format.
WOW... I love GNU/Linux I love Debian.
I did not have to figure out any backend thingy or anything like that. ;-)
