This means that you should get good resolution irrespective of the distro you use. You should have saved the XF86config file when removing Caldera. I had a similar problem with my Trident card. But when I installed Caldera once (just for experimenting different distros), it set me up with excellent settings as far as X was concerned. So, I saved the XF86config file and used it when I installed Red Hat later.
Can you post your "ModeLine" from your XF86config file ?
