The 3310 and 3315 are old phones with hardly any features other than telephone and sms. Do they really need re-programming that badly? Instead if the phones with gprs and wap browsing along with infrared and bluetooth are selected for the experiment, then ringtones, games and other applications can be loaded into them from a normal pc by the users using blue tooth or infrared, instead of the current method of downloading from the service provider at a price. Just as pictures are shrunk to fit into the mobile's screen for net surfing and wallpapers, you could create an application that shrinks video output of normal low Mb pc games and applications so that they can be downloaded directly from a computer into a mobile.
If big cell manufacturers refuse to give their hardware details, how about approaching the Chinese or Koreans for their locally designed handsets? They are seeking markets in India and this would be a mutual give and take for each other.

if u can flash one byte u can flash the whole device. These devices are segmented into sectors. One sector (in some devices) is known as the boot block and requires special instructions to permit reprogramming. The idea is that u should be able to recover from a failed reprogram. There are write protection registers too that determine which blocks can be reprogrammed. And yes i am absolutely sure that those cables are pieces of wire with a max232 (or equiv) ic for fbus / mbus connection to the pc (i made several). since these are the only pins in the 3310 (and from the pics of flash adapters on the links u provided), I am certain.
