according to wat i have seen ... while u browse your network neighbourhood in windoze machines .. ur machine sends user name and passwords accross but since the machine on the other end doesnt require it so it shows all the shares ... but if u similarly try to browse your win2k server machine this is not the case it has authentication mechanism so it will ask for u the password .. remember that login thing which comes when u start ur normal win9x machine and u just press enter ... it is this user name and password that is sent... and if this username and password matches with the one on the other end u are shown the share .. and if encrypted passwords are not sent then the remote machine will give a popup asking for RPC password ... but even if u enter any password it wont be accepted ... coz the remote machine requires plain password ... any ways all this in the documentation and i guess this is a inbuilt feature of samba or windows networking ...that it requires a username and password ...
if i am wrong then please do correct me ..

send ur config file ----- Original Message ----- From: shailesh bhate shailesh_bhate@infy.com To: linuxers@mm.ilug-bom.org.in Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 6:25 PM Subject: [ILUG-BOM] smb problem
Hi All,
I am configuring samba server on linux PCQuest 7.1 based on redhat. My smb.conf goes like this ----
[global] ...... ....... guest ok = yes
[data] guest ok = yes .......some more lines............
I think by configuring like this anybody should be able to see the linux server on windows domain and see the contents without asking for login and password. I am able to see the server in network neighbourhood but am not able to see "data" in it. It is asking for login and password.
Please let me know if I might be neglecting any configuration elsewhere.....
Regards Shailesh
