FWIW - My observation - lappies with Intel CPUs the GPU is typically from Intel and a few have NVidia whereas those with AMD CPU typically have the ATI (part of AMD) GPU and few have the NVidia GPU.
The OP has already disclosed that his GPU is from the Intel family.
I have an Acer 5542 with ATI Radeon HD 4200 and I have experienced the console lock - no ssh access as well but that is yet another problem :)
