Most likely the file is corrupted, if "tar tzf <filename>.tgz" gives error.
Suggest re-download the file(s).
That didn't help :(
I downloaded the security tgz and simply used 'tar xzvf file.tgz' and it unpacked everything properly with the verboze messages.
