It is worth it if you can get it shipped to the US to someone who is visiting. A couple of my friends have the sheeva plug and run it as a NAS/router/gateway/dns for the home network. It is pretty nifty. More computing power than you would imagine from such a low power device.
Also, your assumption that "most people wont know what to do with them." is incorrect. Besides those who already have a sheeva plug, I know a lot of enthusiasts who hack on single board pcs like the beagle board, hawkboard and arduino.
