I move multi-megabyte video files across the internet to a machine more capable of editing them. I also move various other files (via rsync), for backup purposes, to various machines.
The email and chat traffic is a small fraction of that. A slightly larger but still small fraction is the web browsing traffic.
I reckon most of my quiescent state traffic is IMAPS in idle mode and idle ssh packets.
