HostGator & DreamHost are the two major players with the most and the cheapest in the linux hosting market. With US Specific Servers.
I would recommend being cautious while using HostGator. They have quirky policies, for example you cant have public image hosting. You can have personal photo albums but if they find you giving out accounts and allowing people to upload images or such content, they will shut you down. Also, if they get *any* legal notice against your website being hosted there ( I dont know why you may, but just in case ), then they'll pull the plug first, ask questions later!
From what I have read Dreamhost is pretty lenient in what you can host. Plus
you can get really far with the disk space and bandwidth. If you really want free speech, then http://nearlyfreespeech.net is perfect. As a plus, they provide a pay as you go plan.
Also, it would be better to go hunting for coupon codes before actually making a purchase. Webhostingtalk.com "hosting offers" also provide good deals (at least the stickies look like reliable people). You just may save a lot of money.
