For the reasons that others have posted. Software is always getting patched and updated.
It should not be a problem for free distros to add automatic updaters in their software to update just like microsoft's updates.
See Ubuntu. As for automatic, open software prefers to let you have control, so you will rarely see nag screens forcing you to update.
