why r they needed?
It is good to have /usr and /var in different partitions. You can then mount /usr with read-only to avoid problems if the system crashes.
How can I mount my Windows partitions in the RHL 7.1?
mount -t vfat /dev/hard_disk_partition /mount_point
or a similar line in /etc/fstab
