i have mandrake linux installed but all of a sudden it is giving me a kernel panic msg as below

The kernel is invoked with different parameters for "normal" and "safe" mode. The fail safe mode seems to give a more meaningful error message.
As the message states: it is unable to find the "init" program on /dev/hda5. Use Mandrake CD1 to boot in "rescue" mode and see if you can repair/mount hda5. Also strongly suggest make back up of your data files.
