For modem, be on the prowl around the dealers who get a lot of old systems under buyback offers and they may have working external modems to sell.
My beef with external modems is the power supply being outside the box. Somehow I am always 1 plug point short no matter how many I have. Maybe it could be added to Mishra's laws. (Or was it murphy's).
