I've installed Knoppix on three desktops at work.. one of these is a P2-400/64 MB from Dell (we got it for about 8.5K). Knoppix runs faster on this than another P3-800/128MB... My P4 1.5 Ghz/51 MB of course ran knoppix faster than this P2.
My tests are always to run Eclipse 3.0 M8 and OpenOffice from the CD-ROM.
I've not been able to figure out how the P2 is able to run Knoppix so well...
Chipset. PCI bridge speed and graphics card's use of memory. If u have a i810 chipset based mobo ur ram will be shared 50:50 by the cpu and the graphics chipset, reducing your usable ram by half. Any graphics intensive application will prevent the cpu from using ram and slows everything to a crawl.
