I believe, you *have found* a bug! my friend :-)
I think you should post your problem to the Linux newsgroups as well as send copies to the maintainers of XMMS, mp123, FreeAMP etc., But, do read there *bugs* section first before posting. Chances are they know about it and are working on it :-)
