I am a newbie to Linux. I am writing this mail hoping that it will save few hours work for someone somewhere.
In this mail I am describing method used by me for setting up Hathway cable-internet on my home PC using usb-interface & Debian Linux.
My Linux box-
AMD Athlon XP1800+ 128 MB / 80 GB Multiboot - Debian Sarge (from PCQ Dec2004) / XP / 98SE Kernel - 2.6.8 Desktop - KDE 3.2 Hathway cable internet using Motorola Surfboard 5100 & USB cable interface Location - Mumbai, India
1. Information required before you start- (a) IP address assigned by Hathway (like 203.212.xxx.xx) (b) Subnet mask (255.255.255.0) (c) Gateway address (like 203.212.xxx.xx) (d) DNS addresses (like 203.212.xxx.xx) All of the above should be available in the subscription letter issued by Hathway.
2. Your kernel should be compiled with support for USBNET & CDCEther drivers. (Debian distribution by PCQ-Dec2004 have these precompiled).
3. Connect the cable modem to USB port of your machine & boot the machine.
4. The OS will detect the modem as ethernet device as "eth0".(I do not have any ethernet card, else this may change) You can check the same by "dmesg" command. Excerpt from dmesg on my machine is as follows- <quote> eth0: register usbnet at usb-0000:00:07.3-1, CDC Ethernet Device usbcore: registered new driver usbnet <unquote>
5. From start menu > system > networking (or from command line "network-admin") get network setup window. You need superuser password. - Click Add - connection type = ethernet - Configuration = manual - Feed IP, Subnet & Gateway - Finish with creating new connection - Enter DNS addresses in corresponding tab window.
6. You have finished the job !
7. Check with "ifconfig eth0" & "netstat -r" if network interface has correct values & routing table is showing gateway correctly. Output from my machine are as follows-
