I know that imap is a better alternative for that; however, before I start using imap, I have the following doubts:
- can I d'load the mails permanently so that they may be accessible

Yes.

going through fetchmail, but then how do I filter messages (how do I use procmail in this setup)
Good question. One way I would suggest is to dump the messages to an mbox and run formail on it to make it pass through procmail.
- even if I use mutt directly, will mutt sync back with gmail?
Yes.
I know that one can use thunderbird/kmail to do this kind of stuff. my query is how does one do this using fetchmail+procmail+mutt?
I haven't done it myself, but I have seen people do this sort of thing. Sorry if I am not of much help, but I'd love to hear whether you find some way better than the way I suggested above to get this done.
Thanks!
