I was asked to 'suggest a laptop' , obviously I am looking for GNU/Linux friendly device.
The cost is no factor . Any laptop which is a bit light ( unlike the bulky dell's) and works great . It need not be an gaming machine but should pack a punch ( as per the recent times) .
Just yesterday I bought one Acer Aspire 5740 with Intel i3 processor, 3G ram, 320G HDD for my cousin It comes with Limpus Linux CLI.
I loaded Ubuntu 10.04 on the laptop from an USB bootable flash key.
All the devices including wifi, nic, audio, Bluetooth, web cam were detected and usable even from the live disk. (audio volume will need some twicking in future as it quite low).
I am unable to test in-built 3g, modem and SD card reader.
After it downloaded about 300 mb of updates and another 50 mb of audio and video codecs it played all those MP3s, avi, divx, vcd, DVD and even YouTube videos.
It wouldd be nice if details on 'servicing' are added .
Well at least the warranty card says it carries international warranty whatever that means.
an example machine would be : one which can run "compiz 3d + blender+ VLC+ FF(10 tabs one with gmail :P ) + OO" all at the same time :D
I have not given it much spin but the desktop was much responsive even when it was getting updates, I was copying some big video files over network and transfering some file with mobile phone over Bluetooth.
The user who is a cousin is a tech layman and hope him to hook to Ubuntu.
