3-4 years ago when I started using Linux, I hoped I will see widespread use of Linux in Desktop environment, but alas, Linux has still remained in the domain of enthusiasts. The present if is indicative of future, I beleive Linux will continue to dominate the Server environment and Windows the Desktop environment.
Microsoft doesn't agree with your thinking. They have already accepted that they may no longer control desktop. So dotnet stresses browser centric software. They want to control servers, database and webservers and let users access the software with what ever browsers they want. They have already started moves to get larger share of server market, at cost of unix, but lots of linux servers have also moved to windows. Ofcourse, the spate of security holes and virus has prompted return flow back to linux for many and also earned fresh converts.
