^^^^^^^^^ seems like this is device is unsupported. ie: although it identifies itself as a sound controller, there is no driver that claims it.

Umm, which kernel version are you using ? Try using a newer kernel to see if your device is supported. If you already are at the latest kernel, i'd say you are out of luck. Your options would be either buy a new sound card or write the driver.
could you paste the relevant section from "lspci -vvv" and mention your kernel version (uname -a) ?
