When in doubt about the law, dont pull the trigger. If you do pull the trigger, make sure there are no witnesses. If there are witnesses make them accessories. And the best action always is to shoot yourself preferably in the head and blame everybody else if you survive.
In case of the GPL one thing is very clear, if you (or the client ) think that hiding under the rock is key to your business strategy dont use GPL / LGPL stuff.
But that is something very hard for the one trick codemonkeys to understand.
