With 256KB Video RAM, I don't think you can run X at 8bpp either. Try 16 colour VGA mode. It probably isn't set in your XF86Config file, so run xf86config or Xconfigurator to set it. This may set the XF86Config file, which you will then have to copy to XF86Config-4
