hey one thought computer software meant for the lay user must be intuitive in nature. one doesn't have to go out and get a degree in software coding to install a dialer!!!!!
Unfortunately you won't get a WinXP style ease of use in Linux... if that was the case any flavour of Linux would be the only thing in the market today...
Apart from whatever the base installation does for you, if you need something specific, there's a good chance that you'll need to know quite a bit of command line stuff to get it to work. This is what the base camp refers to as the Unix philosophy (lots of dedicated command line tools that can work magic if combined by the right hands).. but as you have experienced this is the downside.
