Neither do I. But I have all three Etch DVDs, so I could get everything I needed, and more. APT takes all requirements from the DVDs if you don't have any repositories and add the DVDs using apt-cdrom.
I installed it from etch testing dvds. There were many issues. I feel, Etch stable may be better now.
Maybe, maybe not. I am not sure what the problems you faced could have been, but the Etch installer isn't perfect. But I would request you to give it another shot when you have the time.
