From the qmail documentation:
Inetd is no longer recommended for use with qmail 1.03. Use tcpserver instead. Running qmail in the background ("csh -cf '/var/qmail/rc &'") is no longer recommended. Use daemontools instead.
the qmail-run package sets up qmail-smtpd to run under tcpserver and not under inetd.
Why is this so?
IIRC, somewhere in the qmail docs it is mentioned that inetd sucks under high loads and hence tcpserver is recommeded. Though I could not make much sense out of it neither did I have the load to actually check it. Some performance metrics were also given.
qmail however works beautifully under tcpserver.
