The only way to cross check would be to replace with a standard cable and observe xp. If there is no such problem in linux then I presume its some compatibality issue with xp and not a hardware problem. I have replaced cables on 6 to 7 different machines. However all were not xp. I am looking for the cause of this problem to understand it better.
