so is it that qmail can only download mails related to the domain name? ie. fetching mails for that registered domain. where does it fetch mails from?

qmail is not meant to fetch mails from anywhere at all. Its an MTA (Mail Transport Agent) - its job is to send mails to places where they are supposed to go ... it talks SMTP.
Use fetchmail to download mail from a POP or IMAP server. Then you can forward these to a qmail server running on your machine/network for local deliveries, or to an MDA (Mail Delivery Agent) like procmail.
